Strengthening and Expanding Mental Health Care in Nepal
Background: A huge mental health treatment gap exists in a developing country like Nepal. Additionally, a large population especially the young and productive age group migrates to gulf countries, especially for labor migration. This has further led to an increase in the incidence and prevalence of mental health and psychosocial conditions among migrant workers and their families. Under this pretext, this project aims to raise awareness on mental health and increase access to mental health services in public health networks in Okhaldhunga and Sindhuli districts. The focus is on strengthening primary-level out-patient treatment in line with WHO’s Special Initiative for Mental Health recommendations and National Mental Health Strategy and Action Plan (2077-082). This will be achieved through capacity building of – teachers, female community health volunteers (FCHVs), and healthcare workers on MHPSS and by organizing mental health workshops at schools and communities. Furthermore, the project aims to provide vocational training and livelihood support to the most vulnerable persons and to form and operate municipal committees for advocacy and sensitization process.
Objectives:
- To promote awareness on MHPSS and reduce stigma related to mental health
- To increase accessibility and effectiveness of MHPSS services in government health facilities
- To increase participation of communities and people with mental health conditions to advocate for their rights and better access to treatment
Implementation areas:
Four municipalities of Okhaldhunga and Sindhuli districts
Time Frame: January 2023 to December 2026
