Enabling translation of Science to Service to ENhance Depression CarE (ESSENCE)
Background: Enabling translation of Science to Service to ENhance Depression CarE (ESSENCE) is a five years research project which aims to bridge the gap between science and mental health care by generating evidence on cost-effective implementation approaches for scaling up an evidence-based intervention for mental disorders, particularly for treating depression. TPO Nepal is one of the partners for the ‘Capacity Building Component’ in ESSENCE. The capacity-building component aims to develop and offer fellowships and online courses tailored for South Asia, to build the capacity of researchers, media professionals, policymakers, and service user representatives to disseminate mental health research and to enhance the uptake of research findings.
Results:
- Fellowship was provided to two early career researchers from Nepal
- Grant was provided to two early career researchers from Nepal for translation, adaptation, and evaluation of an online mental health course for ‘service users and their caregivers’ which was initially developed in English by the ESSENCE team
- Grant was provided to two early career media personnel for translation, adaption, and evaluation of an online course on ‘mental health for journalists’. The aim of the online course was to sensitize media personnel on mental health issues, particularly, building their capacity in reporting and publishing mental health-related issues in non-stigmatizing ways. In total, 36 journalists attended the online course and the evaluation study was conducted with 20 partitions
- Workshops about the adaptability of evidence-based mental health interventions in Nepal were conducted among senior-level policymakers in different parts of the country
