• TPO Nepal has published more than eighty scientific studies in international journals. Some of these studies have been used as a reference in university courses by students, researchers and program designers.

  • For the first time in Nepal, TPO Nepal developed and validated an innovative case detection tool for psychosocial and mental health problems. Community Informant Detection Tool (CIDT) consists of vignettes and pictures that are easy to understand for low literacy population. This has led to easy case identification and increase in access to services in the community.
  • Design and implementation of different psychosocial interventions e.g. Group Healing Intervention, Classroom Based Intervention (CBI)
  • TPO Nepal contextualized“Inter Agency Standing Committee (IASC) guideline on mental health and psychosocial support in emergency settings” which has been adapted by the Government of Nepal. Based on this guideline, cluster based approach is activated in emergencies.

  • In the context of a gap in availability of publications and reference documents in mental health and psychosocial support in Nepal, TPO Nepal has published dozens of publications (manuals, reading materials, posters, booklets, leaflets etc.) to fulfill this gap.

  • A website, Manosamajik Suswasthya (Psychosocial well-being in English), was developed based on the training manuals and study materials published by TPO Nepal to fulfill the gap in psychosocial information for self-care and mental health and psychosocial support issues.

Some initiations in collaboration with Government of Nepal

TPO Nepal has taken initiations and provided technical support for the development of following policy documents:

  • National Minimum Standards (NMS) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for care and protection of trafficking survivors: This document was developed jointly by various stakeholders, led by Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare (MOWCSW) and technical and lead role for facilitation was by TPO Nepal. It was endorsed and implemented by Ministry of Women Children and Social Welfare endorsed in 2068.

 

  • Mainstreaming psychosocial guideline for Children Affected by AIDS (CABA): This document was developed jointly by various stakeholders, led by National Center for AIDS and STD Control (NCASC), Ministry of Health and technical and lead role for facilitation was by TPO Nepal.
 
  • Standard Treatment Protocol for Mental Health services into the Primary Health Care system: This document was developed jointly by various stakeholders, led by Primary Health Care Revitalization Division (PHCRD), Department of Health Services (DoHS), Ministry of Health (MOH) and technical and lead role for facilitation was by TPO Nepal.

  •  Community Mental Health Care Package (MHCP): This document was developed jointly by various stakeholders, led by Primary Health Care Revitalization Division (PHCRD), Department of Health Services (DoHS), Ministry of Health (MOH) and technical and lead role for facilitation was by TPO Nepal. Based on this protocol, mental health services are being provided in the community.
 
  • Provided technical support for the development of modules 1, 2, 3 and 4 for mental health and psychosocial training, in collaboration with different stakeholders and leadership of National Health Training Center (NHTC), Ministry of Health. Module 1, 3 and 4 has psychosocial focus which is used for non-prescribers training while module 2 is used for prescribers training and focuses on pharmacological intervention. On the basis of these modules, various training are being conducted in Nepal.
  • Translation and contextualization of mental health Gap Action Programme – Intervention Guide (mhGAP-IG). Endorsed by Primary Health Care Revitalization Division (PHCRD), Ministry of Health for use in Nepal.
 

Achievement by numbers (2005-2017):

  • 75865 people received psychosocial services. These services include individual psychosocial counseling, family/couple counseling, group counseling, specialized care support, peer support, effective parenting intervention, classroom based intervention, group intervention and peace building activities. These services helped people to improve their psychosocial well-being.
  • Note: Participants could be duplicated in these numbers. These numbers have been counted on the basis of service provided.

  • 12172 people were involved in capacity building activities. Capacity building activities include training on psychosocial issues/specialized trainings. After taking these trainings, they have been supporting their community’s well-being.

  • 88306 people benefited from emergency mental health and psychosocial support. This support includes regular health checkups through health camp and health facilities, community psycho-education, individual and group counseling and focused therapeutic group interventions.
  • 129604 people were sensitized on the issues of psychosocial and mental health. These include psychosocial awareness activities like community orientation, psycho-education, cultural programs, drama, publications, meetings and workshops
