Celebration of World Mental Health Day 2017

An interaction program was held at TPO Nepal central office, Kathmandu on October 10, 2017, on the occasion of World Mental Health Day. The program focused on supporting mental health and well-being of staffs and positive workplace culture, in line with the slogan of this day “Mental health in the workplace”. 23 staffs of TPO Nepal were present in the event, which lasted for three hours. The program was started by Ms. Parbati Shrestha, giving introductions about the day and it’s significance. Mr. Ram Katwal formally declared the floor open for celebration, after welcoming the participants and stating objectives of the program. After this, the program moved forward. A descriptive video entitled “Understanding Pain in less than 5 minutes” was demonstrated, which dealt with the causes and types of pain. This session was facilitated by Mr. Anil Bilas. Participants then provided feedback about the video. Another video entitled “My job is killing me – Managing your stress” was shown which focused on workplace burnout and ways to reduce stress. Ms. Pragya Shrestha facilitated discussion about the video and suggested ways of analyzing and managing workplace stress. “Coping with Stressful work: A self- exploration” form was also distributed by Ms. Jamuna Maharjan for the self-assessment of staffs.

After this, the program moved onto more interactive approaches. Mr. Sauharda Rai and Ms. Pragya Shrestha facilitated the session “Mental Health Support of Staffs”. The session used group work and interaction methodology where staffs were divided into groups and asked to list out the causes of workplace stress and their solutions. Four groups gave presentations one by one and gave some practical suggestions to the management team, to mitigate these causes.

After completion of this exercise, Ms. Indira Pradhan spread positivity among the participants by circulating a piece of metacard that required participants to say their name and their power for good.

Then Ms. Jamuna Mharajan facilitated the session “Art of Listening”. She listed out the characteristics of good listener and bad listener and assigned two people to talk to each other, one person listening to the other attentively for 5 minutes and vice versa. Participants were happy and felt a special sense of bonding with their listening partner after this session.

The program was ended by Ms. Parbati Shrestha after the participants released tension by dancing with their eyes closed, in sync with different kinds of music. She thanked all the participants as well as the team who took the lead to organize the program.

Similarly, an interaction program was conducted at Chautara, Sindhupalchowk on the occasion of World Mental Health Day 2017. The program was organized by District Health Office, Sindhupalchowk with technical and financial support of TPO office, Sindhupalchowk. The interaction program was effective, with active participation from all the concerned stakeholders of the district.

Similarly, a rally was organized by District Public Health Office, Sindhuli, on the occasion of World Mental Health Day 2017, with technical and financial support from TPO office, Sindhuli. The rally lasted for about 15 minutes and was followed by an interaction program among district stakeholders such as District Public Health Officer, mental health focal person and other staffs from District Public Health Office, district hospital staffs, NGO/INGO and media representatives.
